clear quartz

the silence before the knowing

before the vision there is always silence. not emptiness — a particular quality of stillness that arrives just before something becomes clear. clear quartz is that moment, held. the oldest stone. the most neutral.

for when you are in between — between the question and the answer, between the old life and the new one.

clear quartz — sphatik in sanskrit — is one of the most widely distributed minerals there is, found across india including the himalaya. but its significance here is not geological, it is theological: referenced in the vedas, the puranas, the shiva purana and the atharva veda. one of the most textually documented stones in the tradition.

the one stone of the nine that crosses popular and institutional use. the sphatik shivalinga is held to be the purest form of shiva worship; the 108-bead sphatik mala carried japa in the home. the stone of the priest and the householder, the ascetic and the merchant, at once.

the mythology — the silence before the knowing — resonates with sphatik's deepest meaning here: a stone with no agenda of its own, carrying no colour, holding the space before something becomes clear. theologically significant for thousands of years, not merely aesthetic.
